Reflect, Collaborate and Listen! How we can address medical silencing
The writer Arundhati Roy said “There's really no such thing as the 'voiceless'. There are only the deliberately silenced or the preferably unheard”. In this talk Dr Dhairyawan explores who gets heard and believed in medicine and who doesn’t, and how this leads to a culture of silencing that is ingrained from the consultation room, to the healthcare workforce, research, evidence production and global health. Using the framework of epistemic injustice, she will show how medical silencing impacts patient safety and health equity. She will focus on what medical educators can do address this pervasive issue and suggest strategies at individual, institutional and systemic levels to ensure everyone’s voices are equally heard and valued, to improve healthcare for all.
