Session title:
Active inclusion? Experiences and evidence of challenges faced by doctors with disabilities in clinical careers
Please provide one paragraph of text limited to 50 words which is a summarisation of your session
The proportion of doctors with disabilities is lower than in the general population, negatively impacting these doctors and the wider health service which loses doctors with enhanced empathic skills. This panel will draw on on-the-ground experience and published evidence to prompt a conversation about directions for future work.
Learning Objectives
Objectives
1. Learn from the on-the-ground experience of a doctor working with disability in a clinical workplace and the effect on career planning
2. Understand the existing research, drawing on panel members’ research on training and working with disability within medicine
3. Capture wide-ranging perspectives to include policy makers, to help shape the future direction of this work

Interactivity:
Explain the ways in which you will ensure your session will be interactive/encourage participation from workshop attendees? (polling and Q&A will be enabled via the conference app)
Following the sharing of both research and experience, the emphasis will be on a panel Q+A to allow attendees the opportunity to raise their own views, discuss specific questions and address concerns. Polling will be used to allow attendees to submit their priorities for future research, which will be collated for dissemination at the end of the session.
What are the benefits to DEMEC attendees, your institution and/or to the medical/healthcare community?
Attendees will benefit from the opportunity to hear from a panel with both on-the-ground experience, in partnership with the Disabled Doctors Network, and knowledge of research evidence of working as a doctor with a disability and to contribute their expertise in directing future directions for this work. For our institutions, this panel discussion draws on interdisciplinary research expertise and clinical experience. For the healthcare community, understanding the challenges faced by doctors with disabilities in education, training and working spotlights the conversation around the wider context of retention of doctors with experience of disability and illness themselves, who could and do contribute significantly to healthcare.
If at all, how do you plan to involve early career researchers in your session?
Members of the panel are early career researchers
