Prof Pushpinder Mangat

Medical Director and Director of Education and Standards , General Medical Council

Professor Pushpinder Singh Mangat, known as Push, is a senior medical leader and consultant in intensive care and anaesthesia. Born in India and raised in the UK, he studied Medicine at the University of Birmingham, qualifying in 1983. His postgraduate training in general medicine, anaesthesia, and intensive care took place across several UK centres, including Llanelli, Swansea, Cardiff, Birmingham, and Cambridge.
In 1994, he was appointed Consultant in Intensive Care and Neuroanaesthesia at Morriston Hospital. He later held several senior clinical management roles, serving as Deputy Medical Director in Swansea from 2011 to 2018. In 2018, he became the first Medical Director of Health

Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW), where he led the development of the Postgraduate Medical Deanery, managed Dental and Pharmacy Deaneries, Optometry, and the Revalidation Support Unit. His key achievements included implementing a new Pharmacy curriculum and supporting the Eye Care Plan for Wales. In May 2024, he was appointed Deputy Chief Medical Officer for Wales, focusing on medical education and leading initiatives such as the Infected Blood Inquiry response and the implementation of new death certification processes.
As part of the GMC executive team since 1 July 2025 serving as Medical Director and Director of Education and Standards, he oversees medical education and professional standards; driving innovation in training aligned with the government’s 10-year workforce plan and promoting compassionate leadership.
He has been honoured with the title of Honorary Professor of Medicine at Swansea University for his contributions in Wales.
