A15 (3): Using single best answers as a method of assessment: are they effective?

Session objectives:

  • To recognise the strengths and weaknesses of using single best answers for knowledge assessment.
  • To describe the components that constitute a good single best answer in order to accurately assess knowledge.
  • To identify inadequately written single best answer questions.

Session summary:
Single best answers (SBAs) are a widely used assessment format. When well-designed, SBAs are a time-efficient, non-discriminatory, valid and reliable tool for assessment. This session will discuss good SBA writing practice as this heavily influences their psychometric properties, and hence utility for research and educational purposes.
