C3: The department in difficulty: how to address a challenged learning environment

Session objectives:

  • gain an understanding of the underlying systemic and organisational factors that can result in a challenged learning environment
  • develop an approach for examining and assessing a department that is highlighted as one “in difficulty”
  • create a SMART action plan to address the issues identified and mitigate for the system pressures to embed sustained change 

Session summary:
A key threat to excellence in postgraduate medical education remains “the department in difficulty”, where systemic, often long-standing factors related to service pressures and culture result in poor learner feedback. This workshop will use real-life examples to provide approaches to address this recurring problem in postgraduate medical education.
